European Electronic Toll Service

The majority of Member States have installed electronic toll systems to finance road infrastructure costs or to collect road usage fees.  However, the systems and technologies used are not always interoperable creating barriers to the smooth function of the internal market and the free circulation of good and people within the EU.  

Directive  2004/52/EC  on the interoperability of electronic road toll systems in the Community seeks to overcome this challenge by establishing an interoperbale  European Electronic Toll Service (EETS) system.
